In most countries to renew a trademark you have to pay renewal fees. Renewal fee must be paid few months prior to the date of renewal. If they are not paid by expiry date, the trademark will lapse. There are many jurisdictions allowing for a trademark to be renewed after the expiration date (mostly no more than a couple of months) by paying additional fees.
If trademark protection completely expires, the only way to protect it is to register it again. However, in that case, you would face the opposition risks from the competition that might have come after you.
