iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max hands-on: Titanium Design, USB-C, New Colors and More

I just had the chance to take a hands-on look at Apple's new iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models. These tech wonders were recently unveiled at Apple's unveiling event. Both models are packed with a host of upgrades, including enhanced camera capabilities and the ultra-fast A17 Bionic chip, these devices are sure to impress with cutting edge features.

Yet, there are three things that you'll notice right away. First, they're crafted entirely from titanium. Second, there's this really cool Action Button on the left side. And, last but not least, we now have a USB-C port on the bottom. Oh, and there's one more thing - those shiny sides? They're quite the fingerprint magnets. So, let's dive in and unpack all these exciting features together.

Refined Design and Display

The first thing that strikes you about these new models is their titanium frame design. This choice of material has not only allowed Apple to reduce the weight of the devices but also to slim down the sides, making the phones feel more comfortable in hand. Despite this slimming down, the display sizes remain unchanged at 6.1 inches for the Pro and 6.7 inches for the Pro Max.

Dazzling Color Variations

This year, Apple has introduced a new palette that reflects its vision for a more premium and professional look. For both the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, you can choose from Blue, Space Black/Space Gray, Titanium Gray, and Silver. These colors add an elegant touch to the devices, enhancing their appeal.

Revolutionizing Connectivity with USB-C

One significant change in these new models is the shift from the traditional lightning port to a USB-C port. According to Apple, this port supports 10Gbps transfers with a USB 3 cable, allowing users to shoot 48-megapixel photos live using Capture One and record 4K video directly to external storage.

Introducing the Action Button

Another innovative feature is the Action Button on the side of the phone. This button can be customized to perform various functions like launching voice memos, opening the camera or flashlight, changing Focus modes, activating different accessibility features, or even triggering Shortcuts.

Powerful Performance with the A17 Pro Chip

Under the hood, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are powered by the new A17 Pro chip, the industry’s first 3nm chip. This chip offers 10% faster performance cores than the iPhone 15 Pro, a 2x faster Neural Engine, and a new six-core GPU that delivers up to 20% faster performance. The A17 Pro chip also includes a dedicated AV1 decoder for more efficient video streaming and supports 4K60 video output via the USB-C port.

Upgraded Camera System for Superior Photography

The camera system on these new iPhones has also received a significant upgrade. The main camera can switch between 24, 28, and 35mm focal lengths, and the new 5x tetraprism zoom lens on the Pro Max has a 120mm focal length. Users can now shoot in both 48mp ProRaw and 48mp HEIF formats. An update to Portrait Mode now automatically captures depth information when it detects a person, cat, or dog in the frame, allowing users to switch photos to portrait mode after taking them.

Dynamic Island Feature

A notable feature carried over from last year's iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models is the Dynamic Island, an animated feature at the top of the screen that  can show notifications, battery life, time, weather and other information. What makes it exciting this time around is that Apple has expanded this feature to the entire iPhone 15 line. This means whether you're using the iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, or any of the other variants, you'll enjoy this brilliant user-interface tweak.

Enhanced Connectivity and New Features

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max also support Wi-Fi 6E for faster wireless performance and include built-in Thread radios for potential use with Matter and Thread. They also feature a second-generation UWB chip that enables precision finding in Find My if your friends have devices with that new chip, like the new Apple Watches or the iPhone 15.

Satellite Connectivity with AAA Roadside Assistance

One intriguing addition is the expansion of satellite connectivity features to include roadside assistance through AAA. However, while access to Roadside Assistance is free for the first two years, actual roadside service will incur costs, or users must be an AAA member.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999 for the base model, which comes with 128GB of storage. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at $1,119 for the 256GB variant, according to MacRumors. Again, this is a slight increase in price, but the additional storage capacity justifies the higher cost. For those who want more storage, there are also options for 512GB and 1TB models, which are priced higher.

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will be available from September 22, 2023. As usual, they will available for purchase directly from Apple's online store, Apple retail stores, and through various authorized resellers and carriers.

The Bottom Line

In conclusion, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are impressive devices with a range of exciting new features. The titanium frame design, new color variations, USB-C port, and Action Button are some of the standout features. The A17 Pro chip, upgraded camera system, and expanded Dynamic Island feature also contribute to the devices' appeal. Overall, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are certainly worth considering for anyone in the market for a new smartphone.
